Allergy Care

Allergy Care for Children and Adults

Allergies can make you feel run down for weeks at a time. They can keep you up at night, make it hard to focus at work or school, and set off asthma. At Allergy & Asthma Physicians of Commerce Township, we find out what is causing your symptoms and create a treatment plan that fits your life. We see children and adults at our offices in Commerce Township and Mount Clemens.

Our practice is led by Pulin P. Patel, DO, FACAAI, a board-certified allergist and immunologist, together with our team of experienced physician assistants.

What Is an Allergy?

An allergy happens when your immune system reacts to something that’s usually harmless, like pollen or a certain food. Your body treats it as a threat and releases chemicals such as histamine. Those chemicals cause the sneezing, itching, swelling, or rash you feel.

Seasonal allergies flare at certain times of year, usually from tree, grass, or weed pollen and outdoor mold. Year-round (perennial) allergies come from things you’re around every day, such as dust mites, pet dander, cockroaches, and indoor mold.

Common Allergy Symptoms

  • Sneezing, runny nose, or stuffy nose
  • Itchy, watery, or red eyes
  • Mucus draining down the back of your throat (postnasal drip)
  • Itchy skin, hives, or an eczema flare
  • Coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath
  • Swelling of the lips, eyes, or face
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, or diarrhea after eating certain foods

Signs of a severe reaction: Trouble breathing, throat tightness, or swelling of the tongue or throat can be signs of anaphylaxis. Use epinephrine if it has been prescribed, then call 911.

When Should You See an Allergist?

It may be time to make an appointment if:

  • Your symptoms last more than a few weeks or return every year
  • Over-the-counter medicines aren’t giving you enough relief
  • You get frequent sinus infections or a cough that won’t go away
  • Allergies seem to trigger your asthma
  • You have had a reaction to a food, medicine, or insect sting
  • You want to know exactly what you’re allergic to

How We Help

Your first visit starts with a conversation about your symptoms, your home and work, and your health history. From there, we may recommend testing and a treatment plan.

  • Conditions We Treat: hay fever, food allergy, eczema, hives, insect sting allergy, sinus problems, and more
  • Allergy Testing: skin, blood, and patch testing, plus supervised food and drug challenges
  • Allergy Treatment: avoidance plans, medicines, epinephrine training, and biologic therapy
  • Allergy Shots & Tablets: long-term treatment that lowers your sensitivity to allergens over time
